Join the jam - council proud to launch its £150,000 skate park in Exmouth with celebratory skating 'jam' on Friday 26 October 2018

Now that construction of East Devon District Council's brand new skate park at Phear Park in Exmouth is complete, the council and the skate park's designers Maverick Industries Ltd, would like to invite skateboarders, as well as scooter and BMX riders, to a special opening 'jam' event during the autumn half term break on Friday 26 October, from 12pm to 4pm, to help celebrate the opening of this fun facility.

The event will feature informal jam format competitions, as well as thrilling demonstrations by Maverick's own demo riders, including BMXers Scott Hamlin and Harry Boucher, skateboarders Callum and Kieron Waterton, and Jake Sparham, as well as scooter rider Danny Miles, together with Dominator team riders. The activities will be compered by Richie Inskip (aka Geordie).

No registration is necessary – riders of all ages and abilities are welcome to turn up and compete to win some terrific prizes, such as tickets for NASS, boards, t-shirts, backpacks, bike frames and scooter parts, plus plenty of stickers, lanyards and other merchandise, donated by the generous sponsors, including SCUK, Rule 1, Vans, Nass, Animal, GT Bikes, Dominator and Stuntman Mechanix.

The project, which has been led from inception by East Devon District Council, started with the demolition of the old wooden equipment in June 2018 and construction of the high quality replacement concrete skate park by industry specialists Maverick Industries Ltd commenced on 9 July. The new skate park has been funded with £150,000 capital from the council.

Prior to construction East Devon and Maverick Industries worked closely with a group of local skaters and BMX riders to ensure that the design of the sprayed concrete skate park provided an exciting contemporary skate park, suitable for a wide range of users. The final design was unanimously approved by the user group who provided excellent suggestions during the design stage – their input has undoubtedly helped ensure that the park is suited to local styles and preferences.

The new skate park offers a good mixture of street obstacles, as well as a wide mini ramp for users who want to experience air time. The range of obstacles should allow users of all abilities to develop their skills whether they are young or new riders, or experienced and professional skaters.

Although the new design has a smaller footprint than the previous site, its concrete construction will eliminate maintenance issues and provide a much higher quality surface and ramps than the old wooden park.

The skate park has been designed so that should additional funding become available, it can be expanded to fill the site. For example, contributions from developments around Exmouth could be used to further expand the site.

Cllr Andrew Moulding, the Chairman of East Devon District Council, said:

The new skate park at Phear Park is already proving extremely popular and it'll be great to open the site officially and to thank everyone at East Devon, Maverick and the user group who've contributed towards this contemporary scheme.

Improving facilities for young people in East Devon is an important objective for the council and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the new facilities at Exmouth.

Cllr Tom Wright, East Devon District Council's Environment portfolio holder, said:

This fabulous new facility provides the young people of Exmouth and the surrounding area with the opportunity for exercise, fun and the ability to hone their skills. It also demonstrates the council's commitment to providing outstanding services and opportunity for all sections of our community.

Russ Holbert, Maverick's Head of Design, said:

Working with East Devon District Council to deliver the Phear Park skate park has been a pleasure.  It's extremely exciting to see the development of a new concrete skate park come together. Judging by how busy the facility has been since it was completed it is obviously proving to be much needed and a great success.
