A campaign to reopen a taxi rank behind Exmouth Train Station has been launched to help deaf and disabled people visit the town more easily.

The Exmouth Taxi Association has launched the campaign this week to help people with disabilities and visitors to the town make the most of their time in Exmouth.

The association is lobbying Great Western Railway to support the idea.

Exmouth Taxi Association secretary Leon Wilson told Nub News: "It's been a bit of an ongoing saga, we need a taxi rank at Exmouth Train Station.

"We're the largest town in East Devon, we've got the largest holiday park in Europe on our doorstep, a prestigious deaf academy is currently being built in the town, we've also got one of the largest community colleges in the area but we don't have a taxi rank at our train station.

"We've got deaf people and people with disabilities getting off the train who then have to walk 15 minutes into town to find a taxi."

According to Leon there is an area at the back of the train station which used to be used as a taxi pick up point but the area can no longer be used after GWR raised concerns about the area being used by people looking to dodge paying for a train fare.

"We've suggested putting a ticket machine there and we are happy to work with GWR on a solution but we really do need to take action.

"Exmouth is the only large train station in the country without its own taxi rank."

Nub News has contacted GWR for a comment and will update this story once GWR make a statement.
