Following Hugo Swire's shock announcement last night (Friday 12), that he will not be standing at the next general election (click on the red button below for full story), Exmouth Nub News contacted the East Devon Conservative Association for comment.

Chairman, Bruce De Saram said: "Hugo has been an excellent MP.

He has spent 18 years as East Devon's MP having been elected at five consecutive General Elections.

"He challenged injustice at a national level and at the same time was very visible in the constituency.

"He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Commonwealth with strong interests in Sri Lankan political affairs, which being part Sri Lankan myself is very dear to my heart.

"We are very sorry to say goodbye to him and wish him well for the future."
