125 little riders aged one to six wheeled their way over more than 800km on specific bike trails around Exmouth and Exeter during the Summer to earn a 'I'm a Whizz Kid' Lockdown medal.

They also raised much needed funds for the UK wide charity Whizz-Kidz who support disabled children in leading a more mobile life.

The virtual charity ride event was created by Community Interest Company Whizz Kids Toys, based in Exmouth, to boost the morale of little riders after the COVID-19 lockdown.

So many of their usual physical activity events had been cancelled so the charity's founder, Kes Reid, wanted to create something that gave them a focus to practice their riding skills and encourage them to get out of the house and into the fresh air.

Supported by a grant from Exeter City Council with local businesses GX Accountancy, TobyRixDesigns, TinyDesigns and Exe Valley Design & Print helping out too, it was a real community effort.

Although the event was free, generous donations from parents, and Kes Reid from Whizz Kids Toys volunteering her time to run the event, a total of £458 was raised for the charity.

Feedback from the parents and children was so positive. One parent said: "Thank you so much for the challenge. Arlo only learnt to ride in lockdown, not only was the thought of a gold medal a great motivator, but it's brought to our attention some really lovely child friendly family routes which we will continue to enjoy".

"Thank you so much for this opportunity and to spur her on to achieve the challenge."

Kes Reid said: "The medals and certificates were a big hit all round! Great riding Whizz Kids!"
