On December 3, Exmouth fire crews were called in to utilise their specialist animal rescue skills - the animal in question being a 25-year-old horse, standing at 15.2 hands, which had sunk into boggy ground.

The incident occurred in a remote location in the Whiddon Down area at night making it difficult to access.

Experienced rural crews from Chagford Fire Station and Okehampton Fire Station also attended the scene.

In a post on social media, the Exmouth Fire Station wrote: "The horse was found sunk halfway up its body.

"A vet was on the scene, thanks to experienced owners requesting their attendance and all parties worked well together."

A video (click red button below) shows the fire crews easing the horse, which has been mildly sedated to prevent stress, out of the bog using stropping techniques.

The team leader from Exmouth Fire said: "The horse was very lucky that it was discovered almost immediately after becoming stuck in the bog.

"It was a very cold night and the horse probably wouldn't have made it to morning.

"The rescue was a great team effort between fire crews, vet, owners and Exmouth's rescue team."
