Exmouth firefighters attended a barn fire in Whimple yesterday (Sunday 28 November) that saw as many as 16 fire stations fight the blaze.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received multiple calls from local residents at around 1.20pm who could see the barn burning on Rull Lane, Whimple, near Ottery St Mary.

The barn reportedly had wood, farm machinery, gas cylinders and a quantity of stored fuel inside.

Initially three fire engines from Ottery St Mary, Middlemoor, and Honiton and a water carrier from Danes Castle were called to the scene, but at 2.06pm a message was sent out for extra personnel and water. In total, 16 fire stations, including Exmouth, attended the incident.

At 5.30pm, the fire crews were making 'good and steady progress', preventing the fire from spreading to nearby outbuildings and safely removing the contents of the barn.

At 11.30pm, the incident was scaled back after further progress was made and five crews remained on the scene to remove wood from the building and damp areas down.

The incident has now been marked as closed.
