Cold water swimming is said to have many health benefits – but it could also be very dangerous.

Exmouth National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) has issued a warning after seeing some swimmers putting themselves at risk.

The NCI is advising people to be careful where they swim, and not to go into the water on really cold days.

Station manager Ivor Jones said: "This year we have seen a big increase of the amount of swimmers during the winter months compared to previous years - some of whom have gone into the water in front of our lookout, which can be an extremely dangerous stretch of water due to the tidal flow and deep water channel.

"While we appreciate that there are a lot of benefits to be had from this pursuit, we ask that you be mindful of the risks. The sea temperature at the moment is 9 degrees. Cold water can quickly affect your ability to swim and keep yourself afloat. Cold water shock can be a killer."

Lifeguards do not return to the beach until later in the year, so the NCI is asking swimmers to take extra care and perhaps have someone on the shore keeping an eye on them.

NCI watchkeepers are on duty seven days a week at their lookout above the Harbour View Cafe. The current duty hours are 09.30 to 1600; from April 1 they will be on duty from 08.30 to 18.30, and during July and August from 08.00 to 20.00.
