In an effort to clear the sand and pebbles from Exmouth Seafront the Esplanade will be closed tomorrow.

Devon County Council's Highways team will be closing Exmouth Esplanade tomorrow morning to allow work to take place removing the sand and pebbles washed up onto the road during recent storms.

Work will start at 8am on Tuesday, January 21, and East Devon District Council will be following up with a 'beach pull back', shortly after the works have been completed.

A spokesman for Devon County Council said:

"'Road Closed' signs went up on Friday (17th January) for Queens Drive, to prevent vehicles from trying to use the road.

"Our contractor will be removing the sand from Tuesday, under a formal road closure.

"It looks like there's a similar amount of sand to last year, and that took three days to clear. If we can clear it any sooner, all the better. After that, we'll clear out the gullies."

The cost of removing the sand is shared between the County and East Devon District Council.

The county council is expected to complete the works by the end of this week.
