Exmouth's residents, voluntary groups and other organisations are being asked for their ideas on how to spend funding totalling £300,000 on outdoor sports facilities in the town.

East Devon District and Exmouth Town Councils are inviting everyone in the town to send in their ideas on how to spend the money.

The funds – Section 106 money - have been collected by East Devon District Council from housing developments in the parish and the council has a clear policy of ensuring that residents and parish organisations should choose how the money is spent.

Ideas can include all sorts of outdoor sports from an outdoor gym or skate park to works being carried out at a cricket or football pitch.

Proposals must be for:

-New outdoor sports facilities or to improve existing outdoor sports facilities.

-Permanently sited sports facilities and equipment. For example football goals, courts or training areas, so not for movable equipment like cricket bats, kayaks or tennis rackets.

-Sports facilities or equipment that is open and accessible to the community. A small fee may be charged but it must be affordable.

-Funding cannot be spent on buildings, indoor facilities, professional sports grounds or golf courses.

Councillor Geoff Jung, East Devon's portfolio holder for the environment, said: "Since 2008, East Devon District Council has allowed parish and town councils and the local community to decide how Section 106 funding is spent on sport and play. It's really important that local residents get what they want in exchange for new developments in their area.

"I would urge local people and organisations to come forward with any ideas they have for sports projects for Exmouth, as your ideas really could make a difference. By letting us know what you want, it will be more likely that that is what you will get."

Councillor Steve Gazzard, Chairman of Exmouth Town Council, said: "The delivery of additional sports facilities is important in meeting the town's growth needs and creating a place where families and people of all ages will want to live, enjoy and call home. We look forward to seeing the community's ideas."

All ideas must be submitted to Exmouth Town Council by noon on Tuesday, October 15, at the latest. Please send your name, your contact details, information on what your proposal is and an estimate of how much funding you want to apply for if you have one.

Your idea doesn't have to be a worked up project, it can just be a simple paragraph.

Please send your ideas to the town council by e-mail: [email protected] or you can post it to Sports Ideas, Exmouth Town Council, 1st Floor, Exmouth Town Hall, St Andrews Road, Exmouth, EX8 1AW.

Once the town council has received the proposals they will work with East Devon District Council to make sure they are eligible, affordable and possible.

Residents will then be given a chance to look at all the ideas that can happen and vote on them. The eligible ones that gain the most votes are where the money will be spent.
