The Exmouth branch of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI Exmouth) recorded more than 21,000 marine vessel movements in 2021, according to statistics now published.

NCI Exmouth is a charity run by volunteers and works with HM Coastguard and the RNLI by keeping watch over the Exe Estuary and Exmouth beach every day of the year from Coastwatch House on the Esplanade.

In 2021, the statistics also show that NCI Exmouth reported as many as 46 incidents to the coastguard - and another 36 that they were able to deal with themselves.

A spokesperson said: "We recorded 21,421 marine vessel movements past our lookout in 2021.

"We had 46 reportable incidents to Her Majesty's Coastguard and logged a further 36 recordable incidents that our trained watchkeepers dealt with.

"For a full range of the types of incidents we assisted our Search and Rescue colleagues, go to our website.

"We are on duty 365 days a year, 7 days a week. Our current hours are 09.00hrs to 16.30hrs."
