A motion was put before the Exmouth Town full council on Monday by Cllr Pauline Stott, seconded by Cllr Lynne Elson and supported by the conservative group.

The council were asked to give their consent to Cllr Stott to explore the funding and storage opportunities for two beach wheelchairs to be hired out on Exmouth Seafront.

Cllr Stott told the council: "If you are disabled and your family want to go to the beach at Exmouth, you are prohibited because a wheelchair would sink into the sand.

"Just imagine being a disabled, or sick person and not enjoying the beach with friends or family which is something we all take for granted.

"These wheelchairs also allow people the chance to actually experience going on to the beach and also into the sea.

"Perhaps this is the first time a person or a child has experienced this.

"I have been working on this for the last two years finding out how other councils achieve this.

"In Cornwall they got money from the EU so several beaches have them, but here in East Devon we don't have any the nearest is Lyme Regis, Saunton Sands or Bude.

"So with the help of the Town Council and also East Devon District Council, I hope to achieve some of these by next year."
