A local charity is urging people to become carers in their own homes supporting adults with additional needs.

Shared Lives South West described its carer role as "like fostering" and explained it helps "thousands of people to maintain or grow their independence".

People supported include those with learning disabilities, mental health problems, autism, or ageing care needs.

The charity's carers work from home and can be paid up to £536 per week per adult they support. Carers needs transferable skills and a spare room to be considered for the role.

SLSW Carer Lisa Dougal, who lives in Exmouth, supports an individual named Charlene in her own home.

She said: "Charlene has come a long way with being less vulnerable, is more motivated and now has more confidence. She has done really well. I know I've helped her, but that it is down to her as well."

Charlene added: "My mental health has improved and I haven't been to hospital for four years. I do dip but Lisa helps me out a lot and tells me not to worry and sends positive quotes on my phone.

"I'm proud of how far I've come and how much more motivated I am."
