East Devon District Council and Grenadier are due to sign the final part of an agreement for a new watersports centre in Exmouth.

The new centre could include a café and restaurant, public parking, communal space and a new ramp giving direct access to the beach at Queen's Drive on Exmouth seafront.

On Wednesday, March 6, the district council's cabinet agreed on a report explaining the latest details of the agreement proposed with Grenadier. The council is on target to complete the new road and car park by June 19.

Under the agreement, Grenadier will be required to take on the lease for the site on completion of the road and car park. Work on the new watersports centre is expected to finish in the Summer of 2020.

The news was welcomed by the leader of the council Ian Thomas, he said: "I have kept a close eye on the progress of this important regeneration project in our biggest town. I am aware how much Exmouth people want to see the watersports centre come about and local councillors have been asking the question as well.

"It's great to be able to say that we are ready to reach agreement with Grenadier and we look forward to them getting on site."

Peter Quincey, director of Grenadier, said: "Grenadier is very excited to commence with this project and we are keen to get on site as soon as possible following completion of the council's scheduled roadworks.

"We are delighted to have Edge Watersports and Michael Caines supporting the new watersports centre on Exmouth seafront."

Once completed the new car park and road will enable continued access along the seafront.

The playpark and temporary attractions will continue at Queen's Drive Space this Summer while the watersports development gets underway.
