Exmouth RNLI went to the rescue of a dog trapped on a mudbank in the River Exe on Thursday afternoon (January 28).

The inshore lifeboat was called out at 3.20pm after HM Coastguard reported the incident.

The lifeboat crew – Roy Stott at the helm, with David Preece and James Edge – launched shortly afterwards and went to the scene of the last reported sighting of the dog, off Lower Halsdon Farm.

They were helped by the Exmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the crew of the tender of the Starcross ferry, who guided them to the dog's location and helped them recover it safely.

The dog, a 13-year-old cocker spaniel named Chezz, was taken on board the lifeboat and reunited with its owner at Exmouth Marina, apparently none the worse.

The RNLI has advice for people walking dogs close to water; the information can be found here.
