Exmouth artist Anna Fitzgerald has applied for planning permission to turn the public toilets on the Maer into an art studio.

It comes after East Devon District Council advertised for people to "creatively repurpose" several Exmouth loos it cannot afford to run.

If the plans are approved, the Maer toilet block would become Sea Dog Art Studios and provide "a safe space for solo creatives but also for groups to use free of charge".

The ladies would be converted into an art studio for Ms Fitzgerald, while the gents would be turned into a community art studio for people to hire for free.

The toilet units and non-structural internal walls by the doors would be removed, but the disabled toilet would be left intact for everyone to use. The tiles and urinal would also stay to reduce landfill.

The disabled loo would be open from 9am to 4.30pm in winter and from 8am to 7pm in summer.

There would also be a small vending machine and fridge for drinks and snacks, all of which would be environmentally friendly and vegan. Local greeting cards and prints would be offered for sale.

The outside of the building would be decorated with a mosaic mural of reclaimed glass and pottery.

It is hoped that there will also be solar and wind power available, and Sea Dog Art is reportedly seeking expert advice.

Other uses the art hub could provide were listed as performance art, festivals, stand-up comedy, live music, woodcrafts, pottery, art classes, and more.
