A service to celebrate VE Day was held on the Strand in Exmouth on Sunday (8 May).

VE, or Victory in Europe, Day marks when the Allies accepted Germany's surrender during the Second World War in 1945.

Sunday's service was attended by several members of the Exmouth branch of the Royal British Legion, Mayor of Exmouth Steve Gazzard, Town Crier Roger Bourgein, and Andrew Cutler from the Exmouth Salvation Army branch.

In a parade, they paid tribute 'to the service and sacrifice of the entire Second World War generation, from British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces, to evacuees and those who served on the home front.'

A spokesperson for the Exmouth branch of the Royal British Legion said: "There are many parallels between the struggles of the Second World War and what we are going through today. We look to our Second World War generation to learn from their experiences, and we continue our work to protect them from the threat we currently face.

"Although not well attended ... it was a success as we were recently informed one young lad refused to move until the service had finished.

"Special thanks go to Molly for making sure all the bases were ticked and Andrew Cutler for playing the Last Post & Reveille."

Future events to be held by the Royal British Legion in Exmouth will be announced online here.
