The principal of Exmouth Community College has said that staff are "exceptionally proud" of students who collected their GCSE results yesterday (Thursday 25 August).
He added that, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, students have shown "great resilience" and the academy's results have significantly improved since 2019.
Principal of Exmouth Community College Andrew Davis said: "As families will be aware the past few years have been unprecedented and very difficult for many students both academically and pastorally.
"The press has reported that grades may typically have been pitched this year between 2019 (the last year of external examinations) and 2021.
"We are delighted that our results have significantly improved since 2019, a genuinely great achievement in view of circumstances over the last two years.
"We have seen the attainment of students across all their subjects and Grades 9 to 4 including English and Mathematics at their highest level since the reform of GCSE examinations several years ago.
"This is particularly impressive considering the significant increase in the proportion of students following more academically challenging qualifications; a tremendous reflection of student commitment and high aspiration.
"Each of our students receiving results today will have had their very own unique journey, where remote learning may have developed their skill sets or alternately presented difficulties and isolation, and everything in between.
'Exceptionally proud'
"Our staff know it has been far from straightforward for many of the students which is why we are so exceptionally proud of their individual achievements and the way they have persevered and shown great resilience.
"Finally, I am sure the students would wish to join me in thanking parents, carers and other family members for all of their support during their time in Key Stage 4 and of course for the three years previous in Key Stage 3.
"Thanks should also go to all the staff, both teaching and support, involved in helping students achieve these fantastic results.
"From the Key Stage 4 team led by Mr Holt, fantastically supported pastorally and academically this year by Mrs Merry (Head of Year 11), and Miss Sargent (Pastoral Support Assistant), to the great team of teachers, tutors and support staff - thank you all."
