Exmouth firefighters put out Woodbury Common fire
Exmouth firefighters put out an outdoor fire on Woodbury Common on Tuesday (13 June).
The blaze caused "significant damage" to around 80sqm of land. The cause is unknown, but firefighters said it could have been caused by a campfire, barbecue or glass bottles.
Crews from Exmouth were also called out to another outdoor fire the same day.
A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Over the last two days, we have seen a rise in 'fires in the open'.
"[On Tuesday 13 June] White Watch from Exmouth were sent to a fire in the Stowford area of Woodbury Common. Along with the on-call from Exmouth, Middlemoor Fire Station, Bovey Tracey Fire Station, Torquay Fire Station and Clyst St George Fire Station also attended.
"A 4x4 ranger and an ATV with their own water and firefighting lances were used to tackle spits of fire in difficult-to-access areas.
"The fire caused significant damage to approximately 80sqm of land. The cause is currently unknown, but potentially caused by a campfire, BBQ or glass bottles."
