This Thursday (20 May) is Outdoor Classroom Day - a global initiative designed to get children outside at least once a day, and highlight the importance of fresh air and time spent enjoying the natural world.
Since it was created almost a decade ago in 2012, schools across Devon have been taking part, with activities including making their own compost, creating homes for animals, and growing their own food.
According to a survey conducted by Natural England, 80% of children said that being in nature made them very happy, and 70% wanted to spend more time outdoors with their friends.
Katie Coombe, headteacher of Charleton Academy in Kingsbridge, said: "We are lucky to have the countryside and estuary on our doorstep meaning beach safaris, forest school, gardening, real life science experiments and sketching or sculpting inspired by nature are all part of our rich school life."
Devon County Council's Head of Education, Dawn Stabb, said: "This past year has reminded us all how important getting outdoors has been for both our physical and mental health.
"I hope more Devon schools than ever will find the time to mark Outdoor Classroom Day this year."
Schools can add their name to the global map here on the Outdoor Classroom Day website if they'd like to take part.
