Parts of the M5 were shut yesterday (Sunday 21 August) after a large lorry fire took hold.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received several 999 calls at around 2.36pm reporting that the lorry was on fire.

The incident took place on the northbound side at junction 30 near the turnoff to the Sandygate roundabout near Clyst St Mary.

Firefighters from the Dawlish, Newton Abbot, Middlemoor, and Danes Castle stations fought the blaze.

They put the fire out, and the lorry was left 95 per cent damaged.

The cause is believed to have been accidental.
