Exmouth: New cycling group for over 50s set to launch; free taster next week
A new Exmouth cycling group for over 50s is set to be launched in January, with a free taster session taking place next week.
Set up by Katheryn Hope of charity Westbank as part of the 'Healthy Neighbourhoods' project, the group is designed to do get people active and socialise safely during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Katheryn said: "We now have two very good volunteers [with cycling experience] who are very keen to get this off the ground.
"We will start with fairly easy routes and expand as participants become more confident.
"We always stop for a break halfway through when everyone gets to know one another.
"The group will run fortnightly from January 11am-2pm with a stop for lunch each time and is open to people with different levels of experience.
"We have previously had those who have not cycled for years and soon gain increased confidence and fitness levels.
"We always have a volunteer at the back of the group to support those who may not keep up.
"It is a very friendly and welcoming group for those 50 years and above, though a little younger is fine."
A similar group was also set up in Cullompton recently, and has proved very popular.
Next week's free taster
The taster session will take place on Thursday 16 December from 10am to 12pm, and involve a ride to Budleigh Salterton and back (on a cycle path with little incline) with a break for refreshments.
You'll need a helmet, roadworthy bike, and clothes suitable for the weather. To join the free taster, call 01395 446896 or email [email protected]
