An Exmouth in Bloom volunteer joined a teacher and youngsters to help with a special project that has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

As normal, the children at Littleham Primary School had competitions growing sweet peas, sown in autumn, and in early March, with sunflowers and pumpkins.

Potatoes, onions and shallots were also planted but because of Covid-19 the school was forced to close and the children were unable to continue with their gardening.

However, before lockdown was strictly enforced, it was arranged that Graham Bell, of Exmouth in Bloom, together with is partner Sue Legge, a teacher at the school, would continue to maintain the garden until the children returned.

The plants were harvested by teachers and those few children who attended during lockdown.

The RHS and in the Bloom Regions have been incredibly moved by people's stories of courage, creativity and ingenuity in helping your wider community be stronger, greener and happier through this time.

The RHS has recognised how important communities' work has been in 2020.

Littleham Primary School was awarded an 'It's Your Neighbourhood - Feeding the Community' certificate.

Graham Bell, of Exmouth in Bloom, said: "The Covid-19 situation has challenged all of us and the ongoing complexities of working with councils, volunteers and all the new regulations is difficult for all concerned.

"I'm pleased to say that my experience here in Devon, despite the roller coaster, has been a very positive one, with everyone being as proactive as they could be, given the restrictions.
