Exmouth residents have expressed their annoyance over a rise in sewage tanker movements through the town to the treatment works on Maer Lane.
According to South West Water statistics seen by Exmouth Nub News, there were 162 imports of sewage by tanker to the Maer Lane site in October and November 2021 - an average of 2.6 per day.
The imports were from 16 different locations up to 37 miles away, including Cullompton, Uplyme (near Lyme Regis), and Broadwindsor (in Dorset).
Local resident Geoff Crawford said that the tankers pass his home in the Avenues area of Exmouth en route to and from the Maer Lane site. "They pass my house and others," he said, "who have expressed their annoyance at the noise, quantity, smell, speed, size, etc."
South West Water has said that the increase is temporary and comes amid improvement works to two of its sites near Exeter and Axminster.
A spokesperson explained: "We are currently completing extensive improvement and upgrade works at both our Countess Wear and Kilmington treatment sites.
"While these projects are ongoing there will be a temporary increase in operational vehicles on Maer Lane in Exmouth.
"The associated works at Countess Wear and Kilmington are due to be completed in a couple of months, which will reduce vehicle movements to and from the Maer Lane site.
"We would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while we carry out these important improvement projects."
