The owner of the Rockfish group of seafood restaurants in Devon and Dorset is set to take cod off the menu this summer from 11 July.

Rockfish has nine restaurants across the two counties, including one in Exmouth.

Due to sanctions on Russian boats, the price of and demand for cod from non-Russian fisheries have gone up, according to owner Mitch Tonks.

He said: "We know that in parts of Britain, fish and chips means cod and chips. At the moment because of global supply issues resulting in significant cost implications for our customers, we have sat down as a team and made the decision to make this the summer of British fish.

"This is a brilliant time for British fishing and now is our chance to celebrate lesser consumed but excellent British fish such as Hake (in abundance currently and MSC certified), plaice, gurnard and MSC Haddock."

The decision will reportedly not be permanent and Mr Tonks 'looks forward to re-introducing MSC certified cod to his menus when the time is right'.
