Keen kayaker, canoeist and SUP'er (stand-up paddle board) - who has travelled the world to extreme locations in pursuit of his passion - has set up a business in Exmouth to equip sea users with knowledge of how to stay safe on the open water.

Exmouth born and bred, Ali Othen, who was involved with Exmouth Sailing Club growing up, has decided to share his experience of tidal systems and reading the coastal forecast with those wanting to make the most of their SUP board or kayak.

"My aim is to educate people about the environment they are using and how to make appropriate choices taking into account the weather and the tides," he told Exmouth Nub News.

"With my background in the army and as a British canoeing coach and tutor; I'm able to teach people about the tidal flows and currents which can easily catch you out and put you in very dangerous situations."

The Sea Skills day events, which take place in and around the Exe Estuary, will run in July and August - click here for more information.

These courses operate within Government, Sport England and British Canoeing Guidelines regarding the Covid-19 situation, with the groups limited to four people.

Ali is proud to have supported Pete's Dragons; due to advertising his business for free on Facebook, he felt it only right that the money he saved went to a cause close to his heart.

"Having been in the army and seen the effects of PTSD and issues surrounding men's mental health, it's great to be able to support the incredible work at Pete's Dragons."
