Ice cream dreams become reality for Exmouth youngsters

By The Editor 29th Jul 2021

Two Exmouth primary school children have turned their dream ice cream flavours into reality after winning a competition at a local cafe and ice cream parlour.

Maisie and Caitlin from Bassetts Farm Primary School have won this year's Antonio's Ice Cream Competition.

Caitlin's Birthday Cake flavour and Maisie's Mermaid Delight are now on sale and money from each scoop will be donated for the sixth year running to Exmouth RNLI.

Antonio's owner, Tony Badcott, said: "The result of the competition is always the same, tons of eccentric and unusual ice cream flavours that would put Willy Wonka to shame.

"Some of them may actually bankrupt me because they are 70 different flavours in one or they won't sell, like chicken curry flavour."

Tony chose the RNLI as his business' primary charity due to an important family connection to the organisation.

"My mum and dad were lifelong members of the RNLI, sadly they have both passed away so this competition, and my involvement with the RNLI, is a way to commemorate their connection with the charity," said Tony.

"I'm a member and when I started this business I wanted to support a charity at the centre of our community"

The competition started in 2013 with students from Bassetts Farm Primary, since then pupils at all of Exmouth's primary schools have had a chance to create their own ice cream flavour.

Since 2013 Antonio's has sold around 170 different flavours of ice cream. The classic flavours, such as strawberry and chocolate, are sold all year round but Tony likes to rotate different flavours throughout the year.

This week he introduced two new flavours for Easter, crème egg and hot cross bun.

Tony is hoping the proceeds from this year's competition flavours will help him reach his target of donating £3,000 to Exmouth RNLI.
