A new sea monster sculpture with a recycling bin inside has been installed at Sideshore on Exmouth seafront.

Assembled from scrap material, the aim is "to encourage a lot more recycling along the seafront, especially of plastic bottles", Exmouth Town Council said, which partnered with Sideshore for the project.

An Exmouth Town Council spokesperson said: "Samudra (Indonesian for ocean) immediately started drawing attention and admiration from passers-by [when it was installed].

"The intention is to send a clear message to recycle plastic bottles and not leave them littering the beach and seafront.

"There are three entrance points for plastic bottles on the sea creature. EDDC will pick up the bottles for recycling. Exmouth Town Council and Sideshore will monitor usage and invite feedback.

"Unique to Exmouth, Samudra celebrates our Jurassic coast and brings a splash of mystery and magic to Sideshore.

"But on her own, she is not enough. We need more recycling sea sculptures - and (even better) we must remember to bring refillable drink bottles when out and about in Exmouth."

The sculpture was put together by art and community company Little Lost Robot. Its design was reportedly inspired by Exmouth schools Brixington Primary Academy, Withycombe Raleigh Primary School, Exeter Road Community Primary School and the Deaf Academy.
