An explosion at a house in Exmouth this morning activated a large-scale, multi-agency emergency response; with one man taken to hospital to be treated for injuries.

Police, paramedics, the fire service and Devon Air Ambulance attended the address in Hartley Road following reports of a fire in a flat at around 9.40am.

Neighbour, Tracey Smith told Exmouth Nub News: "I was loading my car when I heard an explosion and I ran around to the block of flats and there was a man standing there in his pants.

"When I got closer to him I could see he was burned from head to toe. I gave him first aid until the emergency services arrived."

A police spokesperson said: "One person is reported to have been injured and has been taken to hospital. The extent of any injuries is not known at this time. The air ambulance landed in the town as part of the incident.

"Hartley Road is currently closed and residents have been evacuated from the property."
