Plans to install electric vehicle chargers at the Shell garage on Exeter Road in Exmouth have been submitted to East Devon District Council.

If approved, the proposals would also see a canopy put up over the chargers, a new electrical substation built, and the jet wash bay demolished.

Several trees would also need to be removed to the rear of the garage.

The plans have received one objection at the time of writing, from George and Ellen Donkin of neighbouring property 221 Exeter Road.

Concerns raised include light and noise pollution when cars use the chargers at night, the prospect of the canopy overlooking their garden, and the potential impact on wildlife.

They said: "We purchased the house over 14 years ago and appreciated that we were moving next to a 24-hour garage.

"In the last few years it has also become a 24-hour off-licence which attracts lots of revellers [in the] early hours of the morning buying alcohol. Most of these people turn up in cars with music blaring and shouting to each other across the forecourt.

"We think adding this electric car charging facility to the garage is going to add more noise pollution for us in the future and this could impact on our sleep and mental health in the future."

The application is currently awaiting a decision from the district council.
