Plans for a new solar farm near Cullompton have been delayed after hundreds of objections to the project.

The proposed scheme was to build a huge farm of solar panels outside the village of Langford to generate renewable energy and provide enough power for more than 10,000 homes in Mid Devon.

Recommending approval, the report of the planning officer had said: "As a renewable energy facility, the proposal's location within the countryside is acceptable in principle.

"The limited visual harm that the proposal would give rise to would be outweighed by the environmental benefits of allowing it."

But Dr Phillip Bratby, speaking on behalf of Devon CPRE and the local community, said that the proposal was unacceptable due to its location on a floodplain, its impact on residents and the landscape.

Mid Devon District Council has deferred the decision on whether the project should continue, seeking to gather more information and visit the proposed site after 17 May when large groups will be permitted to meet.
