Planning permission for new flats near Exmouth town centre has been refused by East Devon District Council.

The plans would have seen the single-storey former British Red Cross Society hall on South Street in Exmouth demolished.

In its place, a three-storey building comprised of four two-bed flats and an office suite would have been erected.

The district council said that although the development would have used a brownfield (that is, already built-on) site close to the town centre in a sustainable location, it would have been "visually intrusive and overbearing" and "contrary to the character and appearance of the area".
