An increase in the number of bonfires has prompted East Devon District Council to ask the public to consider more environmentally friendly options for disposing of waste.

Bonfires are not very effective, can cause injury to people or damage to properties nearby, and can produce toxic fumes.

Where can I dispose of my waste?

The council provides some kerbside collection services for recycling, including bulky waste.

Bonfires

Do:

- Keep it small, away from neighbours, and only burn dry suitable materials

- Make sure to have water nearby to put it out, don't leave it to smoulder, and try not to have too many fires, especially at weekends and on bank holidays

- Watch the weather conditions, making sure the wind doesn't blow smoke towards neighbours

Don't:

- Use accelerants such as oil, petrol, or methylated spirits as they could cause damage to you and the surrounding environment

- Burn household rubbish, rubber, oil, green garden waste, animal bedding, plastic, tyres, foam, furniture, or paint, as these could all produce dark toxic smoke

- Burn during foggy conditions as the smoke cannot disperse

What to do if you want to make a complaint

The council recommends talking to neighbours first or leaving them a note, but if this fails you can contact the Environmental Health service by emailing [email protected], or by calling 01395 517456.
