RNLI lifeguards to be on duty at Exmouth beach for Easter holidays
RNLI lifeguards will be on duty on Exmouth beach for the Easter holidays, it has been announced.
Working with the district council, they have also made some changes - the beach will have lifeguard cover from Saturday 9 April to Sunday 24 April, and will then be patrolled daily from Saturday 30 April to Sunday 25 September.
There will be four lifeguards on duty to begin with and the main lifeguard patrolled area will stay unchanged.
In July and August, there will be six lifeguards on duty and a second beach lifeguard unit 250m east of the lifeboat station and a second flagged area.
Windbreaks with safety information will also be put up instead of red flags on the estuary section of the beach.
Regional Lifeguard Lead for Devon Henry Irvine said: "Restrictions have been lifted for the 2022 season but we are still expecting the region to be busy.
"We're hopeful for good weather but it's important to remember that the water is usually at its coldest at this time of the year and therefore increasing the risk of cold water shock.
"We wish you a safe and happy Easter."
The RNLI is urging anyone visiting the coast this summer to make sure they visit a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, check the weather forecast, tide times and read local hazard signage.
It also highlighted that people should 'float to live' if they fall into the water unexpectedly and fight the instinct to thrash around.
In an emergency, you can dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
