2 fire appliances from Middlemoor (Exeter) and Exmouth were mobilised following a request from the Police for our attendance to initial reports of a one vehicle RTC, where a van had left the highway and come to rest in a hedge, trapping the male driver.

On arrival of the first appliance from Middlemoor, they confirmed this was a 2 vehicle RTC, involving one car and one van. Whilst there was no one physically or medically trapped or injures, the driver of the van was stuck inside the vehicle, unable to get out due to its position in the hedge. Our crew set to work stabilising the vehicle to enable extrication and the 2nd appliance from Exmouth was returned en route, as their services were not required.

The crew made steady progress, using a winch and then stabilising equipment, and by 09:34hrs confirmed the driver of the van had been extricated into the care of Ambulance paramedics. Police attended for traffic duties, which also included closing the lane in both directions to assist our crew with the extrication and scene safety. Duty of care was later left with them awaiting recovery.
