The RNLI has issued a warning that strong winds are expected this weekend in the South West.

Boat-owners, swimmers, kayakers, stand-up paddleboarders and even those walking on coastal paths should beware of a strong easterly wind that will cause a large swell and treacherous conditions at sea.

In addition, while the air temperature has warmed up, the sea remains cold at this time of year.

Steve Instance, RNLI Water Safety Lead for the South West, said: "Our main concern is those east-facing beaches or coastal areas that are usually sheltered from the prevailing winds and offer usually calm and safe bathing conditions.

"We're expecting large waves and strong currents which will create dangerous conditions for anyone on or near the sea.

"The strong easterly wind will also mean that people can easily be carried out to sea."

The RNLI has advised people in difficulty in the water to 'float to live' and for others to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
