Devon County Council has launched a survey asking residents for their views on how to improve walking and cycling facilities around Exmouth railway station.

The plans to create an "Exmouth Gateway" include wider footpaths, more pedestrian crossings, cycle lanes, better signage and the closure of the subway.

Some of the initial proposals are:

  • A toucan crossing to replace the zebra crossing near the railway station;
  • A larger central roundabout island and two zebra crossings on the exits heading towards the Strand and Imperial Rec;
  • An improved bus stop waiting area near Exmouth Leisure Centre;
  • Relocating the drop-off area at the railway station;
  • Segregated foot and cycle paths on both sides of the road near the railway station.

The local authority said the changes would "help reduce congestion on our busy roads" and also reduce carbon emissions by encouraging more active travel.

A formal public consultation with more detailed and specific proposals will be held later this year.

Government funding for the scheme, which also includes connecting Dinan Way with the A376, was secured in January.
