Exmouth Town Council and Sideshore Watersports Centre have launched a reusable cup scheme in a bid to reduce waste in the town.

As many as 1,000 'Exmouth Cups', which can keep drinks hot or cold, have now been given to local cafés and takeaway outlets.

Made in the UK from a type of plastic called polypropylene, they can reportedly be used up to 1,000 times before being recycled and do not leach toxic BPAs.

Customers can return them after use to any participating café.

An Exmouth Town Council spokesperson said: "The ambition is for it to be a success and all cafes to replace disposable cups with the Exmouth Cup.

"Exmouth Town Council is monitoring stock and circulation and will make the results available over the next few months."

There are 5,000 more cups on order, many more cafés are "keen to get involved" and there is budget to buy up to 10,000 cups in total, the local authority added.
