If you love a good book and want to learn more about the Exe Estuary a new community project for Devon Libraries might be perfect for you.

Tidelines is working with Devon Libraries to invite people to take part in an Exe estuary wide 'summer read' of Rachel Carson's book The Sea Around Us.

Rachel Carson wrote The Sea Around Us in 1951 and is acknowledged as a key inspirational scientist and activist.

Tidelines is inviting people to record their favourite passage from the book and to come to informal discussions in September, live or online, to share your reflections and questions about the book with other local readers, scientists and researchers.

"Tidelines is a community project creating a range of different activities to bring people together to learn more about and reflect on the Exe estuary and coastline." says Jo Salter, Tidelines co-ordinator and Exmouth resident.

"The Sea Around Us is a sparkling introduction to the science of the oceans written in a poetic, accessible and enjoyable way.

"A fantastic summer read! If you love the oceans, nautical things, marine life, or are simply concerned about the world you live in, then pick up this book."

HOW TO TAKE PART:

The Sea Around Us is available from Dawlish and Exmouth Libraries and through Devon Libraries' Choose and Collect Service in Topsham.

To book a paperback copy or an audiobook, contact: Exmouth Library on [email protected].

You can also download the e-book and audio book with your library card at www.devonlibraries.org.uk.

One of the mobile libraries is based in Exmouth and people can request the book from Exmouth Library and it will be delivered to them. You can also obtain a loan copy from Tidelines, [email protected].

Anyone can take part - perhaps you and a group of friends want to read the book at the same time?

The Sea Around Us summer read runs until Friday, September 18. For more on the Summer Read and other Tidelines activities visit www.tidelines.uk or contact [email protected].
