Two women have been left "shaken" after taking taxis from a rank on the Strand in Exmouth in two separate incidents recently, according to East Devon District Council.

The local authority said the first incident took place in December and involved "inappropriate conversation" from the taxi driver.

The second incident in January saw the driver go at high speeds and become "rude and unprofessional" when the woman highlighted her concerns.

No taxi plates or vehicle registration numbers were identified in the incidents, and there is currently no link between the reported cars or drivers.

The council said it has now launched an investigation.

Councillor Joe Whibley (Independent, Exmouth Town) said:  "Unlicensed drivers pose a threat to the safety of our residents - these recent incidents prove that.

"Even after a long night out, if you follow EDDC's advice, you'll get home safely. Check the taxi for EDDC licence plates, ask to see an ID badge and if in doubt, get out."

An EDDC spokesperson said: "The vast majority of licensed drivers continue to operate professionally in the manner expected of their role and do not tolerate nor welcome incidents of this kind."

The council has also highlighted how the public can make sure a taxi or private hire vehicle is licensed.

It said that taxis will:

  1. Have a yellow roof light with the word TAXI on it;
  2. Have a blue-and-white plate fixed to the back of the vehicle with a licence number and vehicle registration;
  3. Display a vehicle number and fare prices on their dashboard or somewhere inside the front of the vehicle.

And private hire vehicles:

  1. Must be pre-booked through a licensed operator;
  2. Will have a yellow plate fixed to the back of the vehicle with a licence number and vehicle registration;
  3. Are not permitted to display a roof sign and do not operate taxi meters.

Taxi and private hire drivers will also be wearing an EDDC badge with their photo, badge number, name and expiry.

The local authority recommended that you confirm the booking with the driver, note the licence plate number, sit in the back, and let someone else know where you are going.
