The Church of England backed optional prayers of blessing for same-sex couples at General Synod on Thursday (9 February).

It will not change its doctrine on marriage, however, meaning people of the same sex remain unable to marry.

Nub News reached out to Rev. Steve Jones of Littleham-cum-Exmouth parish for his opinion on the decision, but was told that the clergy contacted would not comment individually.

Fr. Robert Sellers of Withycombe Raleigh parish was also approached but he did not respond by the time of publication.

The Bishops of Exeter, Crediton and Plymouth (of the Diocese of Exeter, which includes Exmouth) issued a joint statement, however.

They said: "The proposals welcomed by the Synod uphold the doctrine of holy matrimony unchanged, but also offer a suite of prayers entitled 'Prayers of Love and Faith' that clergy may choose to use according to pastoral need, including with same sex couples following their civil marriage or civil partnership who wish to dedicate their relationship to God and receive God's blessing.

"The resources are designed with a breadth of options and no one will be obliged to act against their conscience.

"Going forward, we pray that the process shaping the new pastoral guidance will be marked by the same mutual respect and reliance on the Holy Spirit that has enabled us to walk together."
