Fire fighters are tackling a blaze in Woodbury Salterton today (Wednesday, August 15) after ‘hundreds’ of hay bales were on fire.

The Fire Service were called to a report of hay bales on fire within a field at the above location. Initially one fire appliance from Middlemoor was mobilised to this incident and then they requested a further appliance for compressed air foam which attended from Danes Castle. This is approximately 300 to 400 large straw bales well alight, crews at work with two hose reel jets and a telehandler was also requested to assist with extinguishing the fire. A water carrier from Danes Castle was also mobilised due to water supply issues and to aid in protecting adjacent buildings. Further details to follow ..

New marker buoys are being installed on the Exe Estuary this week, to identify the location of two new wildlife refuges.
Known as wildlife refuges, the areas are marked out with yellow 'special mark' buoys which have "WR" in black letters printed on them. People are being asked to avoid the areas, all year round at Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve (NNR) and between15 September to 31 December at Exmouth Local Nature Reserve (LNR).
