Local heroes remove graffiti from cliffs near Orcombe Point

Two local heroes, Kirsten Jones and Chris Lynch, took it upon themselves yesterday (1 April) to remove graffiti that appeared on cliffs near Orcombe point earlier this week.

Kirsten said: "I wanted to get rid of it as it was spoiling such a beautiful beach.

"It was an eyesore, plus removing it would hopefully stop a domino effect [of more graffiti].

"It's thousands of years old; it needs to be respected and it should be enjoyed by everyone."

Kirsten and Chris used just water and wire brushes to clean the cliff face.

It took three to four hours to remove.

Chris said: "This is only the second time I have seen graffiti on those cliffs in 25 years.

"As a professional geologist, perhaps I have a greater appreciation of the significance of the rocks at Orcombe Point, but there is so much publicity about the 'Jurassic Coast' that I am amazed someone thinks it's okay to deface these cliffs, covering the geological detail.

"I think the fact that it's the start of the holiday season too prompted me to see what I could do to preserve the reputation of Exmouth as a respectable holiday town.

"It was hard work brushing with seawater and not a perfect job, but we hope it sets an example and that this wider sentiment helps to deter similar vandalism."

Exmouth beach has seen an increase in littering and misuse since the easing of some lockdown restrictions on Monday 29 March.

The litter caught the attention of East Devon MP Simon Jupp, who posted on social media: "Over the last couple of days, we've seen litter strewn across our beaches in East Devon.

"Local volunteers and dedicated council teams have now cleared it up, but it shouldn't be on them to replace other people's lack of personal responsibility.

"Littering is a criminal offence, with a maximum penalty on conviction of a fine of up to £2,500, although most enforcement is carried out by local authorities using fixed penalties of up to £150.

"I know this is an issue close to many people's hearts in East Devon. Volunteers in our towns and villages take part in regular litter picks, with bigger events organised by the Budleigh Salterton Lions Club, Exmouth Litter Blitzers and the Sidmouth Plastic Warriors. I'd like to thank them for all their hard graft and I'm looking forward to future events."
