Plans are being drawn up for a 'Library of Things' in Exmouth, which would enable local residents to borrow items of household and DIY equipment for a small fee.

Transition Exmouth has been awarded a grant of £3,440 from the National Lottery Communities Fund to set up the initiative.

The library would stock items such as long ladders and carpet cleaners, that are needed at times but not used very often.

Catherine Causley from Transition Exmouth said: "We all have items taking up storage space that we use infrequently, so by setting up a library of things we can share these items.

"It will lend domestic scale equipment so we are not in competition with normal hire shops.

"In addition to taking up valuable space at home, these things are expensive to buy. This also has a wider purpose, to encourage a sharing economy and being careful with resources."

"We won't be renting out industrial floor sanders, big table saws or any other dangerous and frankly scary bits of specialist kit.

She said all the items in the library will be serviced regularly and safety-tested.

Transition Exmouth aim to set up the Library of Things in April, if coronavirus restrictions allow.

The group are appealing for volunteers, and donations of useful equipment.

Anyone who would like to get involved, or has an item to donate to the library, is asked to email
