An Exmouth man has raised £270 for the RNLI instead of receiving gifts for his 70th birthday.

Bob Nicholls, who asked his family and friends to donate to the charity, handed over the money with his wife Lyn Holmes at the lifeboat station earlier this month.

Bob said: "I must thank family and friends who were very happy to donate to the RNLI in lieu of birthday gifts and raise so much for a charity that means such a lot to me."

Des White, Chair of Exmouth RNLI Fundraising Team, said: "I was pleased to meet Bob and Lyn and hear about their longtime interest in the RNLI, to congratulate Bob on his birthday and, on behalf of all the volunteers at Exmouth RNLI, to thank him very much for thinking of us in this way.

"His kind and generous donation to our local lifesavers will be used for essential training and equipment for the volunteer Exmouth Lifeboat crews to enable them to continue their work saving lives at sea."
