A senior East Devon Liberal Democrat leader has sent a letter to the area's MP, Sir Hugo Swire, expressing her 'outrage and disgust' at the Government's decision to suspend parliament earlier than expected.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to suspend parliament, otherwise known as proroguing, could mean that MPs will not have time to pass laws which could prevent the UK leaving the EU without a deal on October 31.

During the suspension all parliamentary business stops and any laws being debated at the time could be lost, unless they are 'carried over' to the next session.

The Government's decision has been widely criticised by opposition parties for being 'undemocratic'. However, supporters of the suspension say it respects the 2016 EU referendum by ensuring the UK leaves the EU on October 31.

The East Devon Liberal Democrat Party's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC), Eleanor Rylance, has sent the following letter to Sir Hugo.

"Dear Hugo,

We are horrified by this turn of events.

Once again, and with a heavy heart, we write to you to express our outrage and disgust at the events of August 28th. The PM's decision to prorogue Parliament is an arbitrary abuse of power to suppress parliamentary sovereignty and curtail democratic accountability. It is not the action of a leader in a civilised democracy.

PM Boris Johnson is taking this step in order to force a No Deal Brexit in the country. He knows this is against the declared view of MPs in Parliament who voted against No Deal in March this year- indeed MPs now enthusiastically supporting No Deal were at great pains only a few months ago to speak out against No Deal.

It is an ugly precedent for a government to ignore the express will of Parliament, and quite deliberately to evade democratic scrutiny. We urge you to consider your duty to Parliament and the Crown, and consider how such an evasion and suppression of Parliament will be viewed through the prism of time.

We demand that you put the national interest and the protection of constitutional norms and values ahead of your party loyalty. It is deplorable that this PM is prepared to sacrifice the basic tenets of democratic governance purely for his own political survival and that of his party- once again putting party above country. We call upon you to uphold your duty as our elected representatives to oppose this dangerous and fundamentally undemocratic action.

We further ask you to consider your position in the light of our proud British history of parliamentary democracy. When the history books are written, those who put tribal loyalty before their honour and the lives and livelihoods of their constituents will be shamed in ignominy.

Please act now to prevent this curtailing of Parliamentary sovereignty. Please do not fall in with the facile lie that 'it is only 3 extra days' of recess. We all know that the levels of government scrutiny are very different for recess and prorogation.

We ask you to put the country and the people first, to fight for our right to representation."

So far nobody from Sir Hugo's office has been available to comment.
