Emergency services converged on the Exe Estuary near Exmouth this afternoon to save a person stuck in the estuary mud.

The incident this afternoon took place adjacent to Samsons Boatyard, at the rear of the lorry park behind M&S.

Exmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, Exmouth Fire Station and South Western Ambulance Service's HART team were sent to the scene.

A spokesperson for Exmouth Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Once on scene, Exmouth Fire Service deployed fire officers in Dry Suits and mud rescue "shoes" to assess the casualty.

"They were able to free the casualty fairly rapidly and escort them back to the shoreside where they were assessed by HART paramedics before release."

"Please, be careful when walking the estuary sands, they rapidly turn in to mud and quicksand without warning so you can easily become stuck fast - usually up to your knees but sometimes up to your waist."

If you see anybody stuck or in distress anywhere along the coastline or cliffs, dial 999 and ask for Coastguard.
