Exmouth firefighters responded to a car fire on Bridge Hill near Topsham yesterday evening (Friday 2 September).

The incident started with a crash at around 6pm involving two vehicles, one of which then caught fire.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze and provided initial medical care at the scene.

The extent of injuries is as yet unknown but some "suffered bruising" from their seat belts working properly - which prevented a "very serious incident" according to the fire service.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Last night crews were en route to one incident when they were sent on to a road traffic collision, with one car on fire.

"Thankfully all persons were free and clear of the vehicles on arrival, however one of the vehicles was heavily involved in fire.

"Red watch quickly extinguished the fire using breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet, they also provided casualty care on scene until further medical advice could be sought.

"FF McArdell commented how this could have been a very different incident had everyone not been wearing seat belts, and, whilst some suffered bruising from the seat belts doing their job, it prevented a very serious incident."
