Exeter Port Authority has issued an appeal after a buoy off Lympstone in the River Exe was struck by a vessel and "damaged beyond repair".

The incident reportedly took place on the evening of Friday 26 August, and the vessel, which may also have been damaged, is believed to have been travelling at speed.

The authority thinks that the vessel may now have been removed from the estuary.

A spokesperson said: "On the evening of Friday 26 August No. 31 starboard lateral mark (off Lympstone) was struck by a vessel and damaged beyond repair.

"We believe the vessel must have been travelling at considerable speed and possibly would have sustained significant damage.

"We think this vessel may now have been removed from the estuary.

"Please note a replacement mark has now been put back on station."

The authority has asked the public that if they have any information to contact the Harbour Masters office via email [email protected] or by calling 01395 223265.
