A world record attempt for the largest cream tea party held on the last day of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Lympstone has fallen short - but could still have broken the UK record.

The record remains in the hands of a Chinese car company, who held a cream tea party for 1,088 people back in 2019.

1,070 people sat down in Candy's Field Lympstone on Sunday 5 June, 19 fewer than was required to break the record.

The record for largest cream tea party in the UK is 1,054, however. Organisers are currently compiling paperwork to see if they can claim the record.

Organiser Vic Drinkwater, who is also a fundraising manager for the Royal Marines Charity, said: "It was a crazy idea borne from the lack of community activities over Covid, and the opportunity to do something special as part of the jubilee events in the village!

"We are compiling the paperwork still to see if we might qualify for the British record which is currently 1,054, so [fingers crossed]."

Vic also encouraged participants to donate to the Royal Marines Charity on the day.

Your correspondent can report that everyone appeared to enjoy themselves, and there were at least two renditions of 'happy birthday' and one of 'Sweet Caroline' sung into the microphone after the cream tea.
