A pub in East Budleigh has just become a community pub, and is expected to open on Mothering Sunday (27 March).

The Grade II listed Sir Walter Raleigh officially became a community pub on 4 March this year, under the trading name 'The Sir Walter Raleigh Benefit Society'.

It has reportedly existed since the 16th century when Sir Walter Raleigh was born and raised in East Budleigh.

Local residents, determined to preserve a physical piece of local history, bought enough shares to buy the pub.

More than 90 volunteers have offered to help, with as many as 15 helping with the recent redecoration and refurbishment.

Who's in charge?

The management committee consists of Chairman Mark Duffelen, Clare James, Mike Pulley, Paul Smith, Mark Rice, Maria Malinowska, Jim Bick, and Judith Venning, each of whom is working on a different part of the project, from legal matters to publicity and refurbishment.

Chairman Mark Duffelen said: "The share offer has just closed, but the committee are now moving toward raising grants and donations for a major refurbishment in 12 months' time. It is a very exciting time for everyone, and thanks to the enormous level of support from local people, we expect to make a success of it."

Judith Venning said: "My role has been to ensure everyone in East Budleigh, and the surrounding area has an opportunity to be involved and to purchase shares.

"I also respond to numerous emails and phone calls; providing information on all our activities to date and our plans for the future. I maintain the website and keep the information online up to date. I am assisted by volunteer Georgia White, who is the Social Media guru. and has spread the news from Sidmouth to Exmouth."

The new landlords are Darren and Carole Yates, who have experience running the Bowd Inn (near Sidmouth) and Blue Ball Inn (near Topsham).

This will be their first time managing a community pub. Darren said: "We are very keen to welcome local residents, visitors, and their friends. There will be something for everyone, with good local produce, real ale, freshly cooked meals and a most importantly, a friendly welcome."

Not just a pub

The new community pub won't just be a typical public house - it's also going to have a cafe and host local clubs and groups.

It is hoped that the morning cafe will provide a welcome space for lonely or isolated individuals.

Local groups, such as a history club, crossword and parents groups are reportedly preparing to re-establish themselves on a regular basis in the pub, with two organisations already booked in for lunches.
